Space heaters are a convenient and affordable way to warm up during the chilly winter months. However, space heaters can also be a major fire hazard if not used responsibly. Use our space heater “dos” and “don’ts” for a safer end to your winter season.
- Do: Use the three feet rule. Always keep your heater at least three feet away from anything that has the potential to catch on fire. This includes papers, beds, sofas, curtains, and fabric.
- Don’t: Plug a space heater into an extension cord. Extension cords increase the likelihood of a fire and can overheat or cause someone to trip. Try to avoid plugging a heater into an extension cord or power strip if at all possible. If you absolutely must use an extension cord, remain extra careful, make sure it’s of the correct ampacity to carry the load safely, tell everyone around you to be mindful of the cord, and unplug it immediately after you’re finished.
- Do: Make sure the heater is stable. Keep your heater on a stable and level surface like a section of hardwood floor. Avoid placing the heater on carpeting if possible and make sure the heater’s base is in good working order to prevent it from falling over.
- Don’t: Use a heater that’s too powerful for your space. Don’t use a space heater that’s designed for an area larger than what you need. These units emit more heat and increase the chances of a fire if they’re used in a space that’s too small.
